I love Venice: all those watery streets bobbing with canal boats and the acute absence of any vehicles on the paved streets [it’s very strange to stroll along in an Italian city without a scooter zipping past!] In this Venetian adventure for Free People’s August catalogue, Marloes Horst spends the day sightseeing, wearing casual knits, floppy hats and a relaxed bohemian style. Well, I did promise you another instalment of my holiday in Italy [in case you thought I’d forgotten or something], and this time we take a little food tour… some of the delicious produce for which Italy is so famous. Although it was technically Spring, it was still quite chilly and happily the roasted chestnut vendors were still on the streets of Rome. This is a snack which is not found in South Africa, so I gleefully gobbled up a paper cone of these piping-hot nutty treats.
Fruits so colourfully displayed at a stall in Siena:
Ice cream. In Italy, the ice cream really is good enough to have twice a day. A treat which my children took a decadent delight in!
A little vignette set up in the villa garden with my perfect combinations of flavours: ripe tomatoes, pungent garlic, crusty bread, grassy olive oil & tangy parmeggiano. I really could live on simple food like this everyday:
Salamis, cured hams, prosciutto cruddo, parma hams. And more charcuterie than you can shake a bread stick at. Cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil, to be found around almost every corner in Chianti, made in the traditional way by local artisans.
So have I made you all a bit hungry?

We stayed in the beautiful Chianti region of Tuscany, nearby Siena, during our recent trip to Italy. While going through the millions hundreds of photographs I took, it occurred to me that in order to create a cohesive photo-journal of the sights I saw and places we visited, I should break it up into themes. So first up, in Part 1 of our grand tour, I’ve explored the vineyards and nature that surrounded our villa and nearby towns of San Gusme and Castelnuovo Berardenga. An exquisite variety of spring flowers were starting to bloom and the bright green vine leaves, tinged in a rosy blush, were just beginning to uncurl on their ancient, gnarly stems. Our garden had a very sweet little terracotta statue that was determined to be in a number of my shots, and a very nicely distressed old watering can that I could’ve happily adopted. One of my favourite daily views were the artistically-camouflaged, lichen-covered roof tiles which nestle every rooftop throughout the area. A mundanely common sight for most Tuscans, but for me, these beautifully patterned cotta tiles always had me dashing for the camera!

Hello everyone! I’m back from Italy, had a beautiful and inspiring trip from Rome through to the Chianti region in Tuscany. So much history, so many gorgeous scenes that will be in my memory for a long time to come, and so much ice-cream!
I was busy capturing much of my experience on camera which I’ll share in the weeks to come. But for now, while I recover from my long journey home, I’ll leave you with a little Roman celebration starring the glowing Audrey Hepburn and the dashing Gregory Peck in the 1953 classic “Roman Holiday”.

Loving these lean, elongated silhouettes with a strong forties feel from Antonio Marras.
The inspiration for the A/W 11 collection came via the childhood memories of Antonio’s mother and her beautiful style. In the true forties look, the models wore seamed silk stockings, had bright red lips and hair pulled back into a loose bun. The silk floral dresses printed with roses and poppies are my favourite: love the deep inky contrasting background of the prints with the sudden pops of red.
