Conscious by Nature

Clinton Friedman’s work as a South African photographer pays respect to his subject matter. He celebrates life and shows his affection for the natural curiosities of our world. His bold, graphic and honest portrayals of the botanical beauties which surround our country are subtle, yet full of intensity.

The story of his photographs and prints began when Clinton first found these aloes; bruised, broken and chopped, when visiting a traditional muti [medicine] market in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Traditionally used for their healing properties in African medicine, Clinton did some healing of his own by replanting these rescued specimens in his garden.

When they were healthy enough, he captured their beauty on film, preserving their place in botanical history…roots and all.
