flavour of the month: April

so you all know I’m a massive fan of Instagram… I’m always on the go and I generally snap pictures along the way with my iPhone and share the images through the Instagram app. So this got me thinking that perhaps at the end of the month I should share some of my photographic highlights from that month on my blog. A kind of virtual & visual calendar if you will. So my April went something like this.

Autumn is always a beautifully transitional time of the year in Cape Town, falling leaves of auburn & russet, gold & bronze collect along the streets and there’s a distinct chill in the air as winter waits around the corner. It’s always a lovely time to wrap up warmly and take a seasonal stroll…

5

My son’s hockey season started this term and the tiny white blossoms of this tree on the school field caught my eye as I looked up during practice. At night, Alexandra Fuller’s autobiographical ‘Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight’ kept me captivated as she skilfully tells the incredible story of her childhood in Rhodesia.

6

The new Sushibox restaurant in my suburb may be small, but the ceiling is artfully studded with white paper lanterns creating such an amazing effect not to be missed!

And speaking of lighting, the windows of Poetry have a lovely vintage vibe going on with their multi-patterned lampshades hanging around being pretty. Do you like this look I’m wearing? I am such a fan of all shades of grey, and these new caramel stretch jeans are my warm autumn complement to this cool colour.

4

This fuschia pink bougainvillea gives a vibrant pop of colour to my street, even more striking against a clear blue sky.

7

My studio makeover is reaching its goal and nearly finished, so I’m looking forward to sharing pictures soon. This little tablescape in black & white is a sneak preview. And the gorgeous Skinny laMinx fabrics from Heather’s Flower Dreams launch was a wonderful morning of inspiration.

9

Cavendish Square, my local shopping mall, is having some alterations done and the team invited various schools to decorate the temporary barrier walls with amazing and exciting eye candy… I loved these tin can flowers:

10

The latest Freeworld Design Centre exhibition is a colourful & creative decor exploration in shades of autumn and runs until 8 June 2012. I loved the visual contrast between the 4 design pods and the bursts of neon made my day!

Untitled-1

This bunny peep hole was just a craft-punched piece of paper through which I spontaneously photographed the trees outside my studio window… sweet, no? And another great cappuccino with friends at the lovely Starlings Cafe the other day…

2

To end off my month of April, we went to the nearby seaside town of Kalk Bay for a late breakfast at the famous Olympia cafe, a local & tourist hangout with delicious food & an offbeat atmosphere. And then a lazy stroll through the quirky & interesting Kalk Bay streets, stopping for coffee and a pastry at Boulangerie, the French-style bakery tucked away up a quiet lane. I couldn't help but admire this eye-catching mellow-yellow doorway against a lovely charcoal wall. Stunning colour combination!

3

Well, that’s my flavour of the month. Hope you liked it and pop back again to find out what I get up to during May.

{Almost daily outfit of the day} What I wore to my book signing 4.30.12

Thrifted vintage silk dress; thrifted vintage purse; thrifted Bruno Magli heels; Forever 21 & Neiman Marcus bracelets; thrifted Michael Kors watch

There is an episode of Sex and the City where Carrie Bradshaw travels across the country to appear at a signing of her book. She is terrified that the event will not be well-attended, and that she'll be greeted with an empty room instead of an audience of fans eager to meet her. Of course, this doesn't happen. A packed crowd of women sits hangs on her every word as she reads a chapter, and lines up in droves for her to sign their copies.

My own book signing wasn't nearly the raving success Carrie's was. Instead of a packed house, I met with a mere handful of people - some who bought my book, but most of whom wandered around aimlessly before leaving. But you know what? I really didn't care. I got to live out a dream, where I was featured at my favorite store in Dallas with a book I actually wrote. I got to sit at a table with copies of my book prominently displayed. I got to meet with people who came out purposely to meet me, including a reader who traveled 30 minutes just to purchase a copy (wave to Jamie!) And I got to wear a gorgeous 1940's silk dress that I thrifted for $8.

Life doesn't get any better than that.

Fresh start happens each Monday ...
New post, some small changes in layout, new song on repeat (this time "Run" from Snow Patrol) ....
I was wearing the same outfit from our night out, because many of you asked me about complete look, so here it is. My favorite comfy "semi" baggy jeans, striped shirt, black shoes and bag paired with flowers on my new denim jacket, and of course pink lipstick. Something that can be worn during the day or night. Don't you just love these types of outfits? ;)

Enjoy in this sunny day ....

{Almost daily outfit of the day} My colors are blush and bashful. 4.27.12

Thrifted James Perse top; thrifted H&M shirt; Miz Mooz wedges; thrifted vintage clutch; Forever 21 bracelets; thrifted rose gold Michael Kors watch

I know, I know. This is a lot of pink. If this outfit were a scene from a movie, it would be the wedding scene in Steel Magnolias. Don't pretend you haven't seen it. In it, Shelby (played by Julia Roberts, who wears so much make-up she looks embalmed) walks down the aisle towards Dylan McDermott (as a preppy Southern good ole' boy named Jackson) in a church that looks like it was hosed down with Pepto Bismol. Pink, we learn, is Shelby's signature color. Pink is also my signature color, though I wouldn't go so far as to drown a church in it.

Despite the trials and tribulations I'm going through, pink makes me feel happy and hopeful. Unfortunately, Shelby meets a sad fate, falling into a diabetic coma while her poor sweet little innocent towheaded toddler son wails helplessly in the background and a bubbling pot of spaghetti sauce overflows on the stove and then, AND THEN, Jackson finds her crumpled on the porch clutching the phone which we KNOW she was using to try and call him for help but it was TOO LATE and she dies and there are pink flowers at her funeral and OH MY GOD IT IS THE SADDEST SCENE IN A MOVIE EVER.

Anyway.

The lesson learned from all this? Pink makes for both an excellent signature color and effective plot device in a sappy movie. And it makes you feel pretty. Shelby would agree.

freedom to dance

daniel-jackson5

With a background in ballet, this editorial in the May issue of Vogue China grabbed my attention for Fashion Friday with its delicate movements captured by photographer Daniel Jackson. Top Chinese models Liu Wen, Sui He and Ming Xi alongside ballet dancer Justin Peck create a touching story of fluidity and shape. The simple charcoal backdrop is an alluring contrast to the softest lightweight shades from the spring collections of Calvin Klein, Chloe, Dior, Helmut Lang and others.

I'm thrilled to invite all of you to the celebration and signing of my book, Thrifting 101: A Beginner's Guide to Thrifting and Vintage, this Saturday at Vintage Martini in Carrollton, TX! Vintage Martini has been voted the number one vintage store in the Dallas/Fort Worth area multiple years in a row, and features some of the most amazing pieces to be found in the country - things like Chanel jewelry, Prada pumps, 1920's flapper dresses and extravagant 1950's ball gowns. It's my favorite place in all of the city, and I'm so flattered to host my book signing there.

showcase: Julia McKenzie

5142537505_2f62e10bef_b-jpg

Julia McKenzie is a UK-based artist whose work is primarily drawing based, layered with paper cuts and collage. Julia’s bird art works caught my eye on Pinterest the other day and I’m so glad I found the source of these feathered gems. Julia incorporates map cut-outs and then sketches over these with sayings and messages, creating a whimsical

“I am interested in drawing and recording what I can find in my immediate environment. I look for the evidence of nature I can hold in my hand from my suburban garden to what I can find on my travels to the sea or the countryside.”

Julia’s love commissions are really unique & special. Each collage has been commissioned by someone who wants to celebrate or commemorate something special.

“Each bird, place and piece of text has been chosen to chart a shared life or new beginnings. Each bird symbolizes a place that has meaning for those who it is made for.”
